I regularly check my web mail at one of my former Italian e-mail addresses. To do this I must go to the homepage of a popular Italian Internet provider, kind of an Italian AOL with all the news and latest gossip splashed across the homepage.
This morning I couldn't help but laugh out loud at the utter irony of the first visual impact of this page. There was a picture of the Pope with his little white hat and robes, waving his limp-wristed wave. The Pope is a favorite news topic in Italy. Depending on which channel you watch, you will see more or less of him and his stern faced bejeweled Cardinals pacing the halls of the Vatican.
Directly adjacent to this image was another one of Italy's favorite news stories- a woman's naked rear. Firm and perfected through hours at the gym, so-and-so's butt has been voted the finest in Italy. No small feat.
The finest breasts will follow tomorrow, most likely alongside another holy image of his holiness berating the downfall of family values.
Italy at its finest and funniest.

That is, indeed, funny. And from what I'm learning - very Italian!
The Pope is all over the papers here because of a planned visit to a university that he has been asked NOT to attend. The scientists don't want him and the students are demonstrating against him and his meddling.
As for the butt, well, you know how that goes. Boobs and butts are omnipresent.
Just goes to show how well our contradictions can define us...
