June 1st in the high country

June 1st in Colorado's high country works like this...

First you get to ski on the highest skiable terrain in North America. You get to wear a t-shirt and jeans as you ski, and see baby birds nesting in the treetops and chipmunks skittering across the slopes as you ride the lift up. You get to see your children fly down the mountain and into the runoff stream in the middle of the slope, splashing a wake and screaming.

As you drive the twenty minute road home, you slam on your brakes for the three Colorado mountain goats that run across the street.

And finally, as you turn onto your own street, you watch out for the local fox and her kits, out and about on a warm June 1st in the high country.
